Mansfield Town made it three wins out of three as they beat Forest Green Rovers 2-1 at the New Lawn. George Lapslie opened the score for the Stags early on as he continued his scoring streak. Harry Charsley added a second for the Stags with ten minutes left in the first-half. Odin Bailey’s goal in the 84th minute gave Mansfield a scare, but the amber and blues held on until the end to claim their first League Two victory this season.
Mansfield going into this game won two games from two, one was against League One opposition as the Stags beat Sunderland 1-0 in the First Round of the FA Cup at the Stadium of Light and the other victory was against Scunthorpe United a 2-1 victory in the Papa John’s Trophy at Sands Venue Stadium.
Forest Green came into this fixture less confident than they have been all season as the Glouchestershire side sat near the top of the League Two table, but two back-to-back losses against Swindon during midweek and a 6-2 thumping in the FA Cup last weekend against Lincoln City.
The first chance of the game fell to the Stags as Stephen McLaughlin fired in a cross from the left-side as the versatile player picked out George Lapslie in the box. The midfielder’s shot was blocked at the first attempt, but he was able to convert the rebound.
Mansfield Town continued to work hard in search of their second goal, but it was Forest Green that had a chance of their own. Odin Bailey broke free of the Mansfield defence, but Marek Stech was equal to the shot as he kept the effort out.
Ollie Clarke was introduced in the 31st minute of the match as George Maris got injured and was forced off the pitch.
Four minutes after the early substitution, the Stags made it 2-0 to the good. Jordan Bowery pounced on a loose free-kick from Forest Green as Harry Charsley slammed the ball into the far corner after Bowery’s assist.
Rovers continued to pile on the pressure and in the final minute of the first-half looked to half the deficit. Jamille Matt found a chance to shoot, but Stech made a fine stop to deny the forward.
Kane Wilson was replaced by Aaron Collins as the second-half commenced at the New Lawn. It was hard to find passes and chances early on in the second period as heavy rainfall fell onto Glouchestershire.
Nicky Maynard thought he had made it 3-0 for Mansfield in the 73rd minute, but the linesman ruled it out for offside. Forest Green made two changes as Jordan Moore-Taylor and Jamille Matt were replaced by Mathew Stevens and Jayden Richardson as Mansfield Town tried to sure things at the back as Corey O’Keeffe came on for Nicky Maynard.
A late goal from Odin Bailey in the 85th minute saw Mansfield slightly worried, but the Stags managed to hold on and record their third victory in a row.
With that win, Mansfield moved up to 21st in League Two whilst Forest Green dropped from third to fifth as results went against them.
Next up for the Stags, they return to the One Call Stadium on Friday as they face Colchester United in League Two action once again. Forest Green hit the road as they face newly promoted Barrow.
