Mansfield Town sustained the heavy amounts of pressure that Colchester posed at them as the game ended in a 1-1 draw at the One Call Stadium. Nicky Maynard’s absolute thunderbolt was cancelled out by Luke Norris’ cheeky chip over Marek Stech who was caught in no man’s lad in the 85th minute.
Colchester United got the game underway and they looked to really hit Mansfield hard, but the Stags were able to hold their ground.
Early on, Kwame Poku looked to pick out a pass for Jevani Brown to run onto, but the forward was unable to pounce on Poku’s through ball.
The wing-backs from both sides looked to get control of the game and create chances from their dangerous crosses. Miles Welch-Hayes whipped in a dangerous ball into the Mansfield box, but it was smuggled away.
Kellan Gordon ran up the pitch after Welch-Hayes’ cross was picked up by the full-back. Gordon’s cross was aimed for Bowery, but the forward was unable to connect with the ball.
The Stags looked to continue to create attacks as dangerous balls were whipped in from the left, one was able to get to Nicky Maynard. Unfourtunately, the forward’s header was over.
Mansfield had a chance not long after that to have another shot at Dean Gerken’s goal. The breakaway led George Lapslie to lay the ball off to Mal Benning as the defender’s shot was just wide of the target.
The amber and blues looked to capitalise on every counter attack. Harry Charsley slipped in Jordan Bowery who looked to find Maynard, but the ball was claimed by Gerken.
On the half hour mark, Noah Chilvers was completely unmarked in the penalty area as he beat the Mansfield’s offside trap. Luckily, the header was weak and Marek Stech was able to collect it comfortably.
Ollie Clarke had the final chance of the first-half as the Mansfield captain unleashed a venomous shot. Gerken was able to deny the midfielder with a great save.
The first chance of the second-half fell for the Stags. Stephen McLaughlin’s ball in found Harry Charsley as the midfielder as his shot went agonisngly wide.
McLaughlin had a chance of his own not long after. Welch-Hayes slipped and the winger was away. His shot was ultimately saved by Gerken and it could have been capitalised on.
The Stags took the lead in the 74th minute after a delightful Maynard finish. The forward picked the ball up outside of the box and smashed the ball instinctively as the ball hit the underside of the crossbar and ended up in the back of the net.
Colchester looked to put the Stags under pressure in the final 15 minutes of the game. In the end, it worked for the U’s as a great throughball looked to end up at Luke Norris’ feet. Stech ran out and the substitute lobbed the Mansfield Town goalkeeper to level the game at 1-1.
The game finished 1-1 and the points were split meaning Mansfield remain unbeaten in six games. As for Colchester, they are now unbeaten in three competitive matches.
That result saw Mansfield move up to 20th and Colchester moved up to 6th place in League Two.
