Atalanta put two past Liverpool in rapid succession to edging closer towards a qualification in the group stages. A much-changed Liverpool side struggled to create any real chance in the Champions League fixture that promises goals.
Atalanta started strong, creating several chances and allowing the Italian outfit to show why they are known for scoring so many goals. Their best chance came when Robin Gosens got the better of young full-back Neco Williams, taking a shot towards Alisson’s near post, who strongly palmed the ball out for a corner.
Atalanta had a penalty shout midway through the match. Ilicic was dragged down by Georginio Wijnaldum, however, the claim was ignored.
After a flat 45 minutes from both sides; the scoreline was 0-0.
The Italian outfit started the second half better just like in the first, and Liverpool were on the back foot. Ilicic poked a teasing cross from Alejandro Gomez past the Liverpool number one.
The visitors doubled their lead four minutes later when an unmarked Gosens volleyed in from Hateboer’s nod down.
A frustrated Jurgen Klopp made four substitutions in a bid to get something from the game, but none of the changes could prevent Liverpool from succumbing to their first home loss in 90 minutes since September 2018.
I could open a bottle of coke and leave It for three years. It would still be less flat than this Liverpool side today. Many of the players couldn’t merge into the flow of the game and leave the Reds hoping to pick up some more points on an away trip to Brighton in the Premier League. On the other hand, Alejandro Gomez pulled the strings for Atalanta, with the captain driving the ball through Liverpool’s midfield and finishing the game with an assist.
