Olivier Giroud stole the show as Chelsea tops Group E after a dominant 4-0 victory against Sevilla.
Chelsea unsurprisingly made a lot of changes from their team against Tottenham, having already qualified for the last 16. Sevilla also did not play their strongest team having already qualified for the next round also.
Five minutes into the game Chelsea had a great chance through the returning Christian Pulisic. Hudson-Odoi was found in space on the right and cut it back to Chelsea captain Cesar Azpiliceuta. Azpiliceuta put in a good pass to Pulisic who turned and shot it wide, a chance you’d usually expect him to convert.
Chelsea didn’t live to regret not taking that opportunity though, as just two minutes later Olivier Giroud scored his first goal. The returning Kai Havertz took the ball from just inside his own half to the edge of box and played a nice pass to Giroud who controlled it with his right then finished with his left across goal with a great finish.
Sevilla didn’t look too dangerous in the first half. They had a moment in the 23rd minute with Neysri but he put it wide and was just offside.
A couple of minutes after that Kovacic won the ball in the middle of the pitch and gave Pulisic the ball and he ran into the Sevilla box. He decided to go alone and had his attempt saved by Sevilla keeper Alphonso Pastor Vacas, who only played due to injury to Tomas Vaclik.
That corner gave way to another chance for Chelsea when an Antonio Rudiger header was saved from going into the bottom left corner by a clearance from Lucas Vasquez.
The first half ended with Chelsea up 1-0. Sevilla had brief moments in the first half but overall Chelsea were clearly the better team. They created chances with ease and looked dangerous throughout the entire 45 minutes.
The second half was complete control from Chelsea. In the 53rd minute Kovacic played a good through ball to Giroud who let it run just enough to trick Gomez into committing. Then he chipped the keeper for his and Chelsea’s second goal of the game.
In the 68th minute, Mason Mount failed to convert a chance created from a Sevilla mistake and a lovely pass from Jorginho. However, it was just another missed chance Chelsea wouldn’t regret. A few minutes later Kante played a great ball that was met with a great header from Giroud who would complete his hattrick.
Giroud didn’t stop there however as going into the 82nd minute he was fouled for a penalty when trying to attack a cross from Azpilicueta. He took the penalty and converted his fourth goal.
More good news followed for Chelsea fans as Gilmour came into the game after a long time out. The highly-rated 19-year old’s return is great to see for Chelsea fans.
