A game that lacked real quality and threat, saw Mansfield Town draw 1-1 with Grimsby Town at Blundell Park as the two teams remained 19th and 20th in League Two. Ira Jackson Jr. gave the Mariners a lead in the 63rd minute which was cancelled out by Nicky Maynard’s penalty in the 69th minute.
Owen Windsor had the first chance of the game in the third minute of the game. The Grimsby forward had a long-range effort sending the ball at Mansfield’s goal but it was easily saved by Marek Stech.
Jordan Bowery looked to leap in front of Sam Russell after George Maris whipped in an inviting cross. The Grimsby Town goalkeeper was able to get ahead of the Mansfield forward and claim the ball into his grasp.
At the other end, Ferrand Rawson had to time his sliding tackle to perfection as he denied George Williams from having a chance at goal.
The best chance of the half came from a corner. Maris was on corner duties and found Ryan Sweeney with his delivery. The defender was only able to head the ball at the ground which resulted in Russell catching the ball easily.
Half-time: Grimsby Town 0-0 Mansfield Town
Jamie Reid sent George Lapslie through in the 52nd minute but the midfielder was only able to fire into the side netting.
Ollie Clarke was able to unleash a powerful shot towards the Grimsby goal but Russell was equal to it as he palmed the shot away.
Ira Jackson Jr. gave Grimsby the lead in the 63rd minute of the match. A cross came in from the right and Jackson was able to slot the ball into the back of the net from a rebound that luckily fell for the forward.
It took the Stags six minutes to respond. Harry Charsley was brought down in the penalty box by Grimsby goalkeeper Russell. With his first touch of the game, substitute Nicky Maynard slotted the ball past Russell and equalised the game at 1-1.
Stech was able to keep the game level as Luke Waterfall rose the highest after a corner but the Mansfield goalkeeper was able to get down low to keep the ball out of the goal.
Stephen McLaughlin went for goal from a free-kick and his effort skimmed the side netting and was close from putting the Stags in front.
Owura Edwards had the final chance of the game. The substitute was close from giving Grimsby a late goal that would have seen them earn three points, but his shot was wide of the goal as the game ended in a 1-1 draw and on reflection wasn’t the prettiest of games which was stop and start.
Full-time: Grimsby Town 1-1 Mansfield Town
Man of the Match: Ollie Clarke
The skipper has played another quality game as he looked to continue to build on his match sharpness ever since coming back from injury. His passing was good today and very successful in which was a very stop/start game that was very poor in quality which saw the game end in a 1-1 draw and taking a point on their travels.
