Chelsea vs Aston Villa: Match Report

Chelsea only come away with a point after a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea made six changes tonight and one of them being dropping Timo Werner after going 10 games without a goal.

The first big chance of the game fell to Chelsea in the 11th minute. Jack Grealish played a sloppy pass back towards his centre-backs and Pulisic intercepted it. He took the ball into the Villa box but his shot went wide, a chance he really should be scoring.

In the 31st minute, Chelsea had a good chance after the cross for Giroud was deflected by Cash just behind Pulisic when he was right in front of Martinez and the Villa goal. A difficult chance to convert as Pulisic put it over the bar with an awkward shot.

Chelsea would make up for the missed opportunity as they went 1-0 up a couple of minutes later. Pulisic played Chilwell on the left who put in a good cross for Giroud who headed it in.

1-0 to Chelsea.

Chelsea’s final big chance of the half would come in the 38th minute when Mason Mount was able to manoeuver past Grealish and Cash in the box but put his shot over the bar.

Aston Villa looked bright in the beginning of the first half, but overall a good half for Chelsea who was able to create the best chances. Also a bright first half for Hudson-Odoi who looked great the first 45 minutes.

50th minute Matty Cash put in a good ball to back post to El Ghazi who was left unmarked behind Azpilicueta. El Ghazi’s shot went under Mendy’s legs. Earlier in the build up Grealish may have fouled Christensen who stayed down. The goal still stood though, the foul could have gone either way.

1-1.

Chelsea thought they managed to pull ahead through their captain Azpilicueta minute. Mount played a corner shot to Hudson-Odoi and his cross was headed by Pulisic. His attempt was stopped and the ball fell to Azpilicueta who convereted the chance but the goal was offisde due to Pulisic’s prior involement.

Minutes later Aston Villa nearly scored as well when McGinn’s long shot hit the bar with force. An impressive game from McGinn who was everywhere tonight and looked like the best midfielder on the pitch today.

Lampard brought on Chelsea’s big signings from the Bundesliga, Kai Havertz, and Timo Werner for Giroud and Jorginho in hope to take the lead.

81st minute Aston Villa sub, Ramsey came on and nearly curled a shot into the bottom left corner from just outside the box. Luckily for Chelsea it just went wide.

A minute later Chelsea had a chance when the ball fell to Timo Werner in the Villa box but he put his shot over the bar.

Chelsea’s final good chance would come from Ben Chilwell but his volley went just wide. Would have been one of the best goals we’ve seen this season if it went in.

Full time: Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa

Man of the Match: McGinn

Chelsea hope to collect a much needed three points on Sunday in a tough game at home against Man City.
