Leicester City Go Second In The League With Win Over Southampton FC
It was a fairly quiet first half with both sides enjoying a lot of the possession. Early on in the game, there was a great chance for Leicester to take a quick lead with some great football. Albrighton took hold of the ball on the right wing and crosses it right across the edge of the box for Harvey Barnes, who takes on the shot first time and it gets saved by McCarthy. The first real chance of the game.
The next chance of the half comes from Saints’ Che Adams, with some really clever football from the Southern side. It was a good counter attack from the club, with Theo Walcott on the edge of the box, laying it off to Che Adams who takes on the shot from a really tight angle and is saved by Schmeichel. Some really promising signs from Southampton.
Leicester soon showed why they are in the top four, with some great football and an incredible goal from James Maddison. Youri Tielemans played a lovely through ball to Maddison, who scores from such a tight angle. 1-0 Leicester in the 37th minute. However, it had to be checked by VAR as there could have been a foul in the build up on Diallo, but nothing came of it.
First half ends with Leicester on the upper hand. 1-0.
First chance of the second half came from Southampton, with some pristine football. James Ward-Prowse plays Walcott in with a lovely through ball, right past the Leicester defence. They were in trouble when Theo Walcott took on the shot but it again gets saved from Schmeichel. However, it had hit Schmeichel in the arm and bounced off really awkwardly, with Leicester City getting quite lucky here. Still 1-0 to the hosts.
With Southampton enjoying 53% of the possession, they had a fair few chances that could have lead to goals if they had capitalised.
Another major opportunity for Southampton to equalise came on a blistering run from Armstrong, who lays it off to Smallbone and he takes on the shot first time. Schmeichel saves the shot and the ball bounces into the path of Walcott who loses his balance and couldn’t take the shot on. Leicester once again getting lucky.
Southampton were having chance after chance and another one came along from Stuart Armstrong who has a shot from 30 yards out. With some pace on the ball, it strikes the crossbar and comes back into play. Evans, for Leicester, heads away but pushed substitute Shane Long out of the way and there were calls for a penalty, but nothing given because he was in an offside position when the shot was taken on.
A good opportunity for Leicester, however, came about from Justin who slides a good ball into Jamie Vardy late on in the game. Vardy takes on the shot from not very far out and Mc Carthy saves it. Nice play from Leicester here.
And a second goal from Leicester comes from some decent play from Tielemans who shrugs off Jack Stephens and plays the ball through to Harvey Barnes who runs into the box and finishes a great shot into the bottom right corner.
What does this mean for both teams in the table? This win from Leicester takes them into second place, just above Liverpool by two points. Southampton, however, drop to 8th place in the table.
The games ends with Leicester City taking all three points. Southampton just weren’t good enough. Had all the chances but could not take them. 2-0 Full Time.
Southampton Line Up
Man Of The Match: Che Adams- Some brilliant football from him today and if he had finished his chances then Leicester were in trouble. A great striker performance.
