Tranmere Rovers v Forest Green Rovers – match preview.
Tuesday 19th January 2021
English Football League Two
On Saturday, Tranmere drew a game in which many fans tipped their team to win. Two days later, one of the fan favourites Ollie Banks left for AFC Barrow. On Tuesday night, the best way to make fans happy again? Beat Forest Green at Prenton Park and perform in a playing style that the squad should be capable of. This game will not be easy, as the visitors lie in the playoff positions going into this fixture. However, it should certainly make for good entertainment.
In: Peter Clarke, Liam Feeney and Calum MacDonald. Who all returned to action on the weekend.
Out: There are no new cases of injury and illness. However, Keith Hill awaits the next round of COVID-19 tests.
Forest Green Rovers are managed by Mark Cooper. The 52-year-old gaffer featured for many football league clubs in his playing days, including Exeter City, Birmingham and Hartlepool. However, he also played 48 appearances for Forest Green where he scored 18 goals in the early 00s. After managing 8 clubs, he was appointed manager in Nailsworth in 2016 and has taken them from the national league to a good strong league two side.
The visitor’s one to watch is Jamille Matt. The 31-year-old striker has made ten goal involvements this season in 23 games after departing Newport County.
Last season Cooper’s side finished just outside the playoffs, in a season that was to be decided on PPG. In the FA and EFL cup they would reach the second round before getting knocked out by Carlisle United and Bournemouth respectively. They failed to get past the EFL Trophy group stage and Joseph Mills was their top scorer on 8 goals.
Forest Green have started this campaign off in exceptional fashion, they currently sit 4th in the league table whilst being one point away from the summit. In cup competitions, they haven’t fared so well departing the FA and EFL Cup in the first round. In the EFL Trophy, they failed to go further than the knockout stages.
The Nailsworth club, founded in 1889, won their greatest cup competition when they won the FA Vase in 1982. However beating Tranmere in the 2017 national league final to reach the football league is certainly one of, if not, the greatest achievements in the club’s history.
The ‘man in black’ for this midweek fixture is Darren Drysdale. The Lincolnshire-born official has officiated 16 games so far this campaign and doesn’t shy away from awarding cards and penalties. He has brandished 39 yellow cards, 1 red card and 3 penalties this season. Drysdale will be assisted by Thomas Harty and Paul Stonier. Anthony Backhouse is the chosen fourth official.
Head to head.
I believe, in accordance to ‘Fussball Datenbank’ that Tranmere and Forest Green have met on nine different occasions. Mark Cooper’s side have a better record against their opponents. The first meeting between the two clubs came in 2015, when Tranmere were in the National League. Goals from Gary Taylor-Fletcher and James Norwood ensured that Rovers won. The last meeting between the two clubs was in the playoffs in 2019, another goal from Norwood against his former club ensured that Tranmere were sent on their way to Wembley.
Tranmere wins – 2
Draws – 3
Forest Green wins – 4
Did you know?
Kane Wilson, who starred as Tranmere’s right back last season, currently plays his football at the New Lawn Stadium following his release from West Brom. As well as this, Tuesday’s visitors are the greenest club in the country whilst also enforcing a message of being vegan.
Forest Green have always been a difficult side to face, as they have the stubbornness and quality to win football games. At the moment, Tranmere look a little bit disjointed and have failed to win in their last four games against senior opposition.
Scoreline – Tranmere 0 Forest Green 1
Teamsheet – Davies, O’Connor, Clarke, Monthe, MacDonald, Khan, Lloyd, Spearing, Woolery, Vaughan, Ferrier.
