The Stags claimed a five consecutive victory in League Two after Jamie Reid’s second-half goal secured them the three points and a perfect record of 15 points out of 15.
Mansfield had the first chance of the half after only two minutes. New signing Stephen Quinn clipped the ball into Harry Charsley with the midfielder’s effort blocked by the Southend defence.
Shortly after, Kyle Taylor was able to create himself some space on the edge of the area but saw his effort go wide of Aidan Stone’s goal.
Stone was troubled in the 15th minute after Simeon Akinola’s shot was deflected. The Stags shot-stopper had to sort his feet out to get down low and make a good stop to keep the effort out.
Reid thought he had opened the scoring for the amber and blues in the 22nd minute. George Lapslie knocked the ball down to the forward who smashed his effort goalwards only for a Southend defender to block it on the line.
Half-Time: Southend United 0-0 Mansfield Town
Reid opened the second-half with a chance. The forward got the ball but fired his effort wide of Mark Oxley’s goal.
The Stags were able to finally get in front in the 64th minute. Good work from Jordan Bowery down the left-hand side saw the forward aim his shot at goal. The effort was parried away by Oxley but into the path of Reid who stuck the ball in the back of the net.
With six minutes remaining in the second-half, Southend were reduced to ten-men after Timothée Dieng was shown a second yellow card and was subsequently sent off.
Lapslie looked to pick out a Stags player in the box but his deflected cross was easily claimed by Oxley.
Full-Time: Southend United 0-1 Mansfield Town
Man of the Match: Jamie Reid
The striker made it two goals in two games as he was on target for another game. He could have grabbed a brace from this match but was unlucky not to do so and will be looking to build his confidence and continue his goalscoring record so far.
