Southampton FC VS Arsenal FC Premier League: Match Report

Arsenal’s great form continues with win at Southampton

A great chance for Arsenal to take the lead comes from a through ball by Granit Xhaka, who slides Lacazette in. He is one on one with keeper, takes on the shot but is saved by McCarthy and English midfielder Ward-Prowse clears. Should have been 1-0 there.

Early on in the first half, we saw a great goal from Southampton to open the scoring for the Southern side. It comes from an in swinging corner by Ward-Prowse which meets Armstrong on his right foot, then hits it sweetly past Leno. Armstrong can only score great goals it seems.

Then not long after, Xhaka takes the ball and plays Nicolas Pepe through, with a great ball. And he slots home into the bottom right corner. Some brilliant play from Arsenal here, really clever. 1-1 is the score at this point.

Two goals in the first ten minutes.

Great chance for Arsenal to take the lead here. Constant pressure from the London sees Saka put in a good cross which is head away by a Saints man. This is put right in the path of the former Southampton man Cedric who takes on the volley. Inches wide. Still 1-1.

Southampton take credit for the next major chance. Vokins comes running down the left hand side and whips in a great cross, looking for Che Adams. And it does meet Che Adams’ head, and he knods it down straight at the keeper.

Goal from Arsenal sees them take a 2-1 lead. With some great play from Lacazette, who turns and plays Saka through. He takes it away from McCarthy and around him. And he puts it home. 2-1 to Arsenal.

Second Half: 3-1

Straight away, we see Armstrong pick the ball up on the edge of the box and then plays Walcott through. But he fires straight at Leno who saves it with ease.

Next chance came from Arsenal. Cedric gets past Valery and the full back looks for Lacazette. He fires in a cross which gets past many Saints defenders before being cleared out of the six-yard box. Great chance for them to double the lead.

A two goal cushion comes from a lovely ball up over the top of the Southampton defence. You could say it was a disguised ball because no one saw it coming. He picks out Saka who plays a great cross into the French striker, Lacazette who slots home with ease. Lacazette went crashing into the post, it looked painful but he was fine in the end.

Later on in the game, we saw Ward-Prowse take on one of his trademark free kicks. He lines up to take the shot but Leno stretches to make the save and gets there. Great save from him.

Full-Time: Southampton 1 – 3 Arsenal

Man of the match: Stuart Armstrong- He was clever with and without the ball, and to make it even better he scored an amazing volley. Shame they couldn’t have won the match.
