Chelsea beat Burnley 2-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso
Tuchel got his first win in a good performance from Chelsea. Chelsea dominated the game and their midfield worked well in Tuchel’s new system.
The biggest surprise of the line up was probably the inclusion of Marcos Alonso. Alonso repaid Tuchel for starting him with a great goal. Olivier Giroud and Kai Havertz were also dropped alongside Ben Chilwell, whilst Hakim Ziyech wasn’t in the squad at all.
In the 27th minute, Callum Hudson-Odoi put in a great ball into the box that found Timo Werner. He couldn’t convert his best chance of the game as he failed to line up his shot properly. Chelsea’s big signing from the Bundesliga continues to struggle in front of goal.
A few minutes later Werner put in a low cross that was deflected to the path of Mason Mount. He skied the opportunity over the bar, a chance he should be doing better with.
Chelsea’s first goal of the game came five minutes before the end of the first half. Jorginho played a ball to Mount in a lot of space in midfield.
He found Hudson-Odoi who ran at Pieters and then played, Azpilicueta who was overlapping him. He shot and with the help of a small deflection, from Pieters, his shot found the top corner.
Half time: Chelsea 1-0 Burnley
Christian Pulisic came on for Tammy Abraham as soon as the second half started.
In the 56th minute Hudson-Odoi had his shot deflected by Pieter and onto the near post.
In the 70th minute, Pulisic had a great opportunity to make it 2-0. This opportunity came from another ball from Hudson-Odoi on the right. Pulisic tried to hit pass the first time and just put it wide.
Tuchel took Hudson-Odoi off a few minutes later for Reece James. The 20-year-old had a good game today and was Chelsea’s most dangerous player on the pitch.
James had a good chance to make it 2-0 shortly after coming on. He found himself in a lot of space on the right, like Hudson-Odoi enjoyed for most of the game. But his volley across goal was saved by Pope’s quick feet.
Kai Havertz entered the match in the 80th minute, replacing Mount who also enjoyed a good game.
Chelsea would make it 2-0 through an amazing goal from Marcos Alonso. A little chip from Pulisic went to Alonso in the box. The left-back chested the ball, controlled it with his knee, and then volleyed it goalwards with his left scoring Chelsea’s second goal in style.
Fulltime: Chelsea 2-0 Burnley
Man of the Match: Callum Hudson-Odoi
Tuchel third game in charge will be away against Tottenham Hotspur. The Blues will be hoping they can start to pick up form after this victory.
