Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa: Match Report 30/1/21

Southampton take defeat at home to Aston Villa from Barkley header

After having 60% of the possession over Villa, the Saints lose from a header in the first half.

Oriol Romeu comes back into the side after an injury.

First Half

Early on in the game, we saw Southampton take on a promising spell of possession. Redmond passes it on to Ings, who flicks it past the defender and into Stuart Armstrong who puts it over the bar for a goal kick. Exquisite play from Ings. You can really see why he is linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, after some pleading from the Saints, there was a check on VAR for a potential handball from Matty Cash. The check was shortly over, and it came down to no handball. 0-0.

The next major opportunity came from the Birmingham side, with a great chance to take the lead. Grealish plays it into Targett who smashes in a ball for Ollie Watkins who takes on the shot. It gets saved by McCarthy excellently and clawed away by Bednarek.

Goal from Aston Villa in the 41st minute.

Grealish plays in a great cross looking for Ross Barkley and reaching him who plants the header away no problem. The away side go one goal ahead in this tie.

Second Half

A chance for Southampton to equalise came from a free kick into the box, which gets head away. Not far though and it falls to Nathan Redmond who plays it into Danny Ings. A swift through ball by him sees it reach Che Adams who takes on the shot straight at the keeper. It was a great save by Martinez.

Following that, the corner came in and Bednarek meets it in the air. He heads it on and it is going in but once again Emi Martinez gets there. Another great save by him! But, Ings is there with the follow up. He hits it at the goal again but is blocked by the defender and out into the path of Traore who gets the ball away.

Still, Villa have the lead over the hosts.

Now, Southampton have a great chance. Ryan Bertrand takes on a cracking shot which is saved by Martinez and put into the path of Ings who slots home. They run off to celebrate but the flag is up. It goes to VAR and they find out that Ings is offside by his arm. Heartbreak for Southampton here, and certainly controversial.
