Jorginho penalty gives Chelsea 1-0 victory away to Spurs
Chelsea handed their former manager Jose Mourinho his first back to back home defeats in his long career. Despite only scoring one goal, Chelsea was undoubtedly the better team and looked to have improved already under Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea scored the first goal of the game in the 24th minute from the penalty spot. Timo Werner won the penalty after a clumsy attempt from Eric Dier to win the ball whilst already on the floor.
Jorginho, despite not being as efficient from the spot as he was last year, took and put the pen away without his usual technique.
Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea (Jorginho)
Bad news for Chelsea would come in the first half though, when Thiago Silva would come off with what looks to be a hamstring injury. He was replaced by Andreas Christensen.
Tottenham did have a good chance in the first half through Serge Aurier. Son delivered a great cross from a freekick but Aurier put the header wide, a chance he should have managed to get on target and trouble the keeper.
Chelsea would have the final chance of the first half howveer, in the 46th minute. Reece James’ pass found Mason Mount in space, just inside the box. Mount took too long to coontrol the pass and by the time he got his shot off he closed down by Tottenham defenders.
First half: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea
66th minute Chelsea had a great chance after regaining possession from a bad clearance from Tottenham captain, Hugo Lloris. Mount played a great cross behind Spurs, and Pulsiic dived at it. Lloris also divided and managed to punch it out before Pulsic could connect.
A minute later Chelsea had another great chance through Mateo Kovacic. He’s been having a great game and had a chance to add a goal to his great performance.
He had a great run through the midfield in tons of space, he could have slotted through Werner, or taken the chance on himself but he couldn’t make his mind up. He ended up just poking at the ball and sending it wide rather than getting a good shot off.
75th minute Mason Mount, whose also had a great game had a good chance to double Chelsea’s lead. He created space from Dier when he shifted the ball to his left, but his shot across goal was saved by Lloris. A shot you expect the world cup winning keeper to save but nevertheless a good opportunity for Chelsea.
A quiet second half from Spurs started to liven after a decent chance created by Erik Lamela. A good run followed by a good curling shot to Mendy’s right from distance, however you would expect Mendy to save that.
In the 86 minute Spurs got the best chance of the game through Vinicius, who hasn’t received much if any service at all tonight. A great cross from Aurier found led to Vinicius heading the ball wide in a chance he should be scoring.
Full time: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea
Man of the Match: Mason Mount
Big three points from Chelsea who continue to look good under Tuchel. They look forward to continue their form against Sheffield United.
