Newcastle 3-2 Southampton

Newcastle grab a much needed three points after win over the Saints

First Half

The first goal was for Newcastle in this tie and it comes from some superb play by Saint-Maximin, shrugs off Bednarek and plays it into debutant Joe Willock and he slots home past Alex McCarthy. One goal up within fifteen minutes.

The next major chance was actually for Southampton, where Che Adams picks out Ings with a lovely pass. He is through one on one with Darlow and it gets saved. Saints looking for an equaliser here.

The second goal for Newcastle is an own goal, once again from Bednarek. Saint-Maximin plays it to Almiron who rolls it out under his feet and takes the shot on. It takes a deflection off Bednarek and it is in for the Toons’ second goal.

Southampton looking to get back into the game here, with Ryan Bertrand down the left hand side, playing a ball to loanee Minamino, who puts it through the defences and shoots. It goes flying into the top of the net. Southampton back in the game at this point.

Newcastle get a third goal here, and it is Almiron shining through in this game. He grabs it off of Bertrand and he is through and slots home nicely to increase their lead. Three goals to one. Just before half-time as well.

Second Half

Southampton try to get back in the game once again here with a Ward-Prowse trademark dead ball free kick. It is truly astonishing and gets placed in the top left corner. What a finish. Three goals to two.

Jeff Hendrick gets sent off in the 48th minute as well, with a second yellow.

A corner from Southampton sees them try to equalise, with a towering header from Jannick Vestergaard but it is straight at the keeper and gets saved. Brilliant chance not taken.

Southampton dominating possession here at St James’ Park. Che Adams plays a ball out to Redmond, who takes a touch and passes to Ings and he fires striaght at the post and it is saved. Saints can’t quite break down 10-man Newcastle.

The final main chance came from Southampton where Darlow comes out to try and get the ball away but misses and Danny Ings is there but it is cleared off the line this time.
