Sheffield United vs Chelsea: Match Report

Chelsea beat Sheffield 2-1 with goals from Mason Mount and Jorginho

Chelsea won their third game in a row and continue to look good under new coach Thomas Tuchel. He made quite a few changes to last week’s line-up, bringing in Andreas Christensen for the injured Thiago Silva. Also bringing in Olivier Giroud, Ben Chilwell for Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Marcos Alonso.

Chelsea had an early scare 31 seconds in. The Blues gave the ball away and Oliver Burke was in behind with a great chance at goal.

He somehow failed to even trouble Mendy and his shot went wide. Chelsea was very fortunate to not go behind there.

There was more early trouble when it looked like Sheffield won a penalty in the 12th minute. A clumsy challenge from Chilwell brought down Chris Basham after he had controlled a ball from good cross.

Luckily for the the left back, VAR ruled him offside so the penalty was overturned.

35th minute Chilwell played a great pass to Mason Mount in the box. However a great block from Kean Bryan stopped Mount from scoring. Chilwell was offside though, so despite the great chance it would not have counted.

Mount would score Chelsea’s first goal in the 43rd minute. Chilwell played a ball forward and Werner used his pace to beat Chris Basham to it. He cut it back to Mount, who slotted it in the bottom right corner from the centre of the box.

10 minutes into the second half Sheffield United would equalise through an own goal from Antonio Rudiger. Rudiger went to pass the ball to Mendy who was coming out and ended up kicking it past the keeper and into the net.

A terrible moment of madness from Rudiger.

Chelsea would answer back quickly though. Werner again utilsed his pace to get in behind the Sheffield defence. He capitalised on a bad pass and went to knock the ball around the keeper but was taken out.

The referee let the play go on but eventually went to the monitor and gave a penalty. Jorginho went back to his usual technique and converted the pen.

Sheffield United 1-2 Chelsea

Sheffield had a promising move when John Fleck made a great run into the Chelsea box, but Rudiger was able to block his attempt to put the ball in the box.

Chelsea next face Newcastle on February 15. Another win would be big for the Blues’ top-four hopes, as they continue to look good under Tuchel.
