Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner’s goals give Chelsea 2-0 win against Newcastle and put them fourth in the Premier League.
Chelsea had their first big chance that came from corner on the right. Mason Mount’s delivery found Cesar Azpilicueta in space, his header was blocked, however.
Chelsea are tied at the top of the premier league for goals scored from corners with eight. A large part of that however, was Thiago Silva and Zouma, both didn’t play tonight.
The blues’ next chance would come a few moments later when Tammy Abraham had a free header after a quick ball into the box from the left. He couldn’t get the connection he wanted and put the ball wide. A difficult chance but one a top striker should be doing better with.
Bad news would come around the 18th minute. After a tackle from Jamaal Lascelles, Abraham would go off injured.
Chelsa brought on Olivier Giroud after the injury and he made an impact in the first half. Giroud would score Chelsea’s first goal of the game.
Timo Werner played a big part in the goal taking on Ciaran Clark on the left and putting in a low cross in the danger area. Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow was able to get a hand to it but it fell to Giroud who put it in the back of the net.
Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle (Giroud)
Another big chance would fall minutes later through Werner. A great run followed by a clever pass in behind from Matteo Kovacic gave the german his first big chance of the game. He failed to convert, however, putting it over.
Werner would eventually get his goal, only minutes later too. A corner from Mount missed the head of Chelsea players but would deflect of Lascelles and into the path of Werner. An easy chance that he made the most of.
Werner scored his first goal in the Premier League since November 7th, when he scored against Sheffield United in Chelsea’s 4-1 victory.
Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle (Werner)
46 minute Mount has a big chance when Azpilicueta found himself in an incredible amount of space on the left. He chose to shift the ball to his left and shot across goal. His attempt went wide. A chance he could have and should have done better with.
End of first half:
57th minute Chelsea had a chance to make it 3-0. Alonso’s deflected long range effort found Hudson-Odoi in space inside the box.
He managed to cut it back first time for Kovacic whose shot went over. A difficult chance to convert as the pass from Hudson-Odoi did bounce towards him.
Werner had a big appeal for a penalty after a push from Lascelles. The replay showed an obvious push but VAR didn’t give a penalty. Minutes later Newcastle had a chance.
Kepa Arrizabalaga didn’t have much to do this game, but he made a good save to deny Joe Willock from scoring his header.
It was a surprising decision to include Kepa in the starting line-up instead of Mendy, but the spaniard didn’t put a foot wrong tonight. However, Newcastle didn’t test him much this game.
Reece James would replace Hudson-Odoi in the game and was close to scoring soon after he came on. In the 77th minute, he took a shot that Darlow saved with his feet. A difficult shot to deal with after the deflection it took from Jamal Lewis.
Chelsea moves up to fourth in the table, overtaking the champions Liverpool who are understandably going through a tough time. They also go level on points with West Ham.
The blues face off against Southampton next and hope to continue their great form under Tuchel.
82nd minute Newcastle had a great chance to get a goal back through Miguel Almiron. A clever flick from Joelinton put him in behind for a volley on his strong foot. But he couldn’t get his shot on target.
