Mason Mount penalty gets Chelsea a 1-1 draw after Minamino put Southampton ahead.
Chelsea only came away with a point despite controlling possession for most of the game. The Blues didn’t create many clear-cut chances at all and in the end, a draw seems like a fair result.
Chelsea’s first good chance came at the fifth minute, Mason Mount found Reece James in space on the right. James played a clever ball to Alonso at the far post rather than just putting it in the box.
Marcos Alonso put his volley wide though, a good chance that Chelsea perhaps should have done better with. We know Alonso is capable of scoring such chances.
Southampton would score the first goal of the game through Takumi Minamino. A good pass from Redmon put him one on one with the goalkeeper.
He would show great composure and force Mendy and the incoming Azpilicueta to commit, and then calmly convert the chance.

First half: Southampton 1-0 Chelsea
Chelsea would start the second half with a change, Tammy Abraham coming off due to an ankle injury for Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Chelsea equalizer would come through a Mason Mount penalty. His drive into the box was met by a poor tackle from Danny Ings. Mount sent the keeper the wrong way, calmly slotting the ball on the right.
The next big chance of the game fell to Southampton. A deflected cross fell to Vestergaard who managed to get more than a good header off and hit the crossbar.
At the 75th minute, Tuchel surprisingly took of Hudson-Odoi for Hakim Ziyech despite Hudson-Odoi only coming in at halftime. He also brought on Jorginho for Kovacic at the same time.
Chelsea had a great opportunity to pull ahead. Mount got himself in a great position on the left after dribbling past Djenepo. He chipped a ball to the far post to James who couldn’t get his shot on target. His shot went over the bar and the score remained 1-1.
A game Chelsea should be winning in order to secure their place in the top four ended in disappointment. The Blues will be hoping to move past this disappointing result with a win against Manchester United in their next fixture.
