Tranmere Rovers v Oldham Athletic
Saturday 20th February 2021
English Football League Two
This weekend Tranmere, who won Tuesday night to win their place at Wembley for the Papa Johns Trophy final next month, will play host to Oldham Athletic for a league two fixture. Rovers are currently buzzing, following the win away to Oxford United and a successful run of form in general, thus they will play an attacking style as they aim to add another three points next to their name in their search for promotion. Oldham, on the other hand, look set for a place in mid table following two wins in their last six but will come with their own game plan that very nearly worked recently against Forest Green Rovers.
In Keith Hill’s meeting with the press prior to this tie, he stated that there are no doubts with anyone Otis Khan who picked up a knock on Tuesday night as he looks to select a strong eleven to come up against the Latics.
Although Oldham come into this game on a different playing level to the hosts, as they sit towards the bottom of the division, they are certainly capable of causing problems this Saturday. Conor McAleny leads their goalscoring charts with 14 goals and an assist in 26 games, the 28-year-old came through Everton’s youth but signed for the Latics after spells at many football league outfits in 2020 and has since hit the ground running. There are other names to be wary of, Danny Rowe and Bobby Grant being the second and third highest goalscorers for Harry Kewell’s side. The Australian was appointed in the same year that McAleny was brought in.
The ‘man in black’ this weekend is Sebastian Stockbridge, who will be assisted by Ravel Cheosiaua and Chris Isherwood. This campaign Stockbridge has officiated 20 games and in them he has awarded 64 yellow cards and two reds respectively. The Tyne-born referee has featured at Prenton Park once already this season, in Papa Johns Trophy action for the game against Manchester City’s under 21s in early December. Scott Oldham is the selected fourth official.
Christmas day 1935 saw the first meeting between the Whites and the Latics. Oldham were the hosts that day and they won 4-1 in Division Three North action. In accordance to ‘11v11.com’. However, this may not be strictly true as it is well-known that Bunny Bell scored nine times on Boxing Day that year as Rovers won 13-4 at Prenton Park. Tranmere also won the last meeting between the two clubs, at Boundary Park, on 1st December 2020.
Tranmere wins – 33
Draws – 21
Oldham wins – 35
I believe that Hill’s men, who come into this game in great spirits will get the vital three points. It’ll be closely contested as I believe that Oldham will be a difficult side to break down on the day. I can also see George Ray, who has impressed recently, replacing Manny Monthe in the starting eleven.
Scoreline – Tranmere 2 Oldham 1
Team – Scott Davies, Otis Khan, Peter Clarke, George Ray, Calum MacDonald, Liam Feeney, Jay Spearing, Paul Lewis, Danny Lloyd, James Vaughan, Kaiyne Woolery
