Amazing Olivier Giroud bicycle kick gives Chelsea 1-0 victory against Atletico Madrid
Chelsea defeated Atletico Madrid 1-0 in what was a close game. Both sides had chances but both failed to take the lead until a great goal from Giroud. Giroud scored his first goal in the Champions League knockout stages since 2015.
Mason Mount picked up an early yellow card. Bad news for Chelsea as it means that he will miss the second leg of this tie.
The first big chance of the game came to Atletico in the 14th minute. Suarez managed to get himself in a good position and flashed a ball across the Chelsea box. Thomas Lemar couldn’t reach the ball in time and only managed to flick it out for a goal kick.
Chelsea would have a similar chance a minute later when Mount flashed a ball from the right but Werner wasn’t able to reach the quick cross at the front post.
The best chance of the first half went to Atletico Madrid through Luis Suarez. A chance a player of his quality should be scoring. Angel Correa cut the ball back for Suarez who couldn’t get a shot off.
The first half was pretty much even, with both sides being wasteful, and also having chances they could have taken advantage of. Mason Mount looked like Chelsea’s best player of the half and most likely to create a chance for the Blues.

In the 63rd minute, the Blues learned they would be without another player in the second leg. Jorginho picked up a yellow card after fouling Joao Felix. Another big loss for Chelsea.
Chelsea went 1-0 up in the 71st minute after a fantasy goal from Olivier Giroud. Alonso put in a cross that deflected off Mario Hermosa.
Giroud capitalized on it and scored a magnificent bicycle kick.
