Mason Mount also dropped to the bench due to Tuchel giving him a rest after participating in England’s World Cup Qualifiers matches.
Christian Pulisic was awarded a start and paid it back with the first goal of the game. Marcos Alonso took a freekick that hit the post and Pulisic scored the rebound to make it 1-0.

Chelsea could have made it 2-0 through Timo Werner as he was one on one with former Chelsea player Branislav Ivanovic. Werner couldn’t beat the 37 year old who used his strength to end the counter attack.
Ivanovic had to be taken off after this move for Callum Robinson despite only playing 12 minutes. West Brom were forced to utilise two substitutions in the first half.
Reece James won the ball in Chelsea’s half and started a dangerous counter attack in the 43rd minute. Kovacic was patient while he waited to James to make a run on the right rather than attempting a pass to Werner on his other side.
James’ shot was straight at Johnstone who made an expected save. A good chance for the Blues to double their advantage.
Johnstone would go on to assist West Brom’s equaliser in the 45th minute. A great pass that put Pereiera one on one with Mendy and he took the chance, lobbing the Chelsea keeper.
