A tightly contested battle at St James Park ended in a 0-0 draw between Exeter City and Mansfield Town. A good performance from the Grecians and the Stags saw the sides take a point each from the encounter
The first chance of the half fell to Mansfield Town. Stephen Quinn crossed the ball in and George Lapslie’s volley went agonisingly wide of the right post.
A mistake at the back for the Stags allowed Jack Sparkes to run onto the ball. Exeter’s number three tried to find Ryan Bowman but the forward was unable to latch onto the pass as it ran out for a goal kick.
Lapslie started off a fantastic free-flowing move for the Stags as the midfielder passed the ball onto Jordan Bowery. Mansfield’s number nine played a lovely through ball to Ollie Clarke with the captain’s attempted pass into Tyrese Sinclair blocked and out for a corner.
The subsequent corner from Sinclair was cleared away only as far as Quinn, but the midfielder’s effort was over the bar.
Exeter were finally able to get closer to Aidan Stone’s goal in the latter stages of the first-half. Bowman was able to get a shot off but it was blocked well by Ryan Sweeney.
A few minutes later, Lewis Page found himself in acres of space and was able to have a shot with his effort over the Mansfield goal.
Stephen McLaughlin was able to drive into the Exeter penalty area and forced Jokull Andresson into a save after his low effort.
Jake Taylor crossed the ball into the Mansfield box in the dying embers of the first 45 minutes. Sparkes was able to connect with the ball and Stone did well to keep the effort out diving to his right-hand side.
Half-Time: Exeter City 0-0 Mansfield Town
Quinn played a lovely ball over the top into Bowery. The striker held the ball and waited for his teammates to run into the box. He finally crossed the ball into the path of Clarke but rather than connecting with the ball it rather bounced off the top of the captain’s head and out of play.
Substitute Randell Williams looked very lively since coming off the bench at half-time. The midfielder ran into the Stags box and looked to fire a cross into Bowman, but the delivery was blocked by George Maris and eventually cleared away from danger.
Williams had another chance and used his pace and dribbling ability to full effects. He got into the Stags box and ran all the way to the centre of the box only for his shot to be blocked by James Perch.
Quinn played Sinclair through as the youngster took the shot off but it was saved well by Andresson to close down the angle and deny Mansfield’s number 27.
Matt Jay was able to have a shot from outside of the Stags box but Perch was there again to deny the shot from going goalwards.
Perch curled the ball into Quinn but the midfielder was unable to direct his effort at goal after his diving header went wide of the target.
Full-Time: Exeter City 0-0 Mansfield Town
Man of the Match: George Maris
The midfielder was ever-present as he usually is, defending very well and helping the side when they look to move further up the pitch.
When Randell Williams came on, he did well to help Stephen McLaughlin in keeping the midfielder quiet and was tasked with the distribution and did it very well.
