Chris Hughton made 2 changes to the starting 11 that were defeated by Huddersfield last time out, with Lyle Taylor replacing Lewis Grabban upfront and Sheffield United loanee Luke Freeman replacing winger Anthony Knockaert
Forest had some defending to do early on as Birmingham looked to heap pressure on a Red’s defence that conceded twice on home turf at the weekend. The Reds’ lacked any real threat early on in the game as Birmingham suffered a couple of knocks early on.
There was a lack of clear-cut chances for both sides, Brice Samba having more work to do out of the 2 keepers however. The game was a well fought midfield battle… not much more than you would expect from a game between 2 bottom half teams without too much concern of relegation towards the end of the campaign.
The first half continued and lacked any real tempo until Ryan Yates came very close to opening the scoring in the final 5 minutes, his header rattling the crossbar and just failing to put Chris Hughton’s men in front at half time.
Half Time: Birmingham 0-0 Nottingham Forest
Birmingham started the 2nd half with a bang, Roberts found himself in space and headed the blues in front from a corner at the back post. The Reds’ looked to find an equaliser as they started to put more pressure on the Birmingham defence soon after falling behind but still never looked menacing enough to challenge the Birmingham net.
Lyle Taylor had a slither of a chance to put the Reds’ in front but Etheridge closed his angles well and Taylor struggled to get enough contact on the ball to direct goalward. Forest looked to create opportunities but failed to create anything they could convert… until late on a challenge in the box on Scott McKenna resulted in a penalty that Grabban converted in the 99th minute gifting the Reds’ an arguably undeserved point on the road.
